Sumbawa, Wonderful Indonesia
Sumbawa, in the province of West Nusa Tenggara, is one of the most wonderful islands in Indonesia. It is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain with Lombok to the west, Flores to the east and Sumba further to the southeast. Sumbawa is 15,448 km2, three times the size of Lombok with a population of around 1.5 million of which the majority are occupied with agriculture and fishing.

Traditionally, Sumbawa has been divided into two main groups of people, each with their own languages; Sumbawanese in the west and Bimanese in the east. The western population is related to the Sasak people on Lombok and speaks Basa Samawa (Bahasa Sumbawa) while in the east speaks Nggahi Mbojo (Bahasa Bima) and has a clear relation to Flores.
Sumbawa lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is a volcanic island, including Mount Tambora which erupted in 1815, the most destructive volcanic eruption in modern history. This island is also best known for its waves, sandy beaches and wild terrain. With great surf and spectacular coral reefs, the majority of travelers come to surf and dive.

The Exotic Sepanjang Beach
Known to bear a resemblance to the Kuta beach in Bali, Sepanjang beach is one of the beaches which has beautiful scenery. The name ‘Sepanjang’ which means ‘long’ derives from the characteristics of the beach that has the longest coastal lines among all beaches in Gunung Kidul.
Precisely located in Kemadang village, Tanjungsari, Gunung Kidul, the beach with its natural atmosphere has clear blue sea water and clean white sand. The seaside is decorated with palm trees and huts roofed with dry leaves. The reefs in coastal tidal areas are still well-maintained. The dashes of waves reflect a blue color signaling uncontaminated sea water. The beach is also home for abundant marine animals, including star fish, sea snails, sea urchins, crabs, shrimps and fish.
Throughout a long coastline, visitors can sunbathe, surf or just enjoy the beauty of the beach with its gentle breezes. There are no permanent buildings alongside the beach, but few huts inhabited by local people who sell food and beverages. Visitors can sit on bamboo seats in the huts, have a rest, enjoy the blowing wind of the sea while having a drink or chatting. When daylight fades, the visitors can see the sun set to the westwards.

A tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a large low-pressure center and numerous thunderstorms that produce strong winds and heavy rains. Tropical cyclones feed on heat released when moist air rises, resulting in the condensation of water vapor contained in the moist air. They are fueled by a different heat mechanism than other cyclonic windstorms, from European windstorms and polar lows, leading to their classification as “warm core” storm systems. Tropical cyclones originate in the doldrums near the equator, about 10° away from it.
The term “tropical” refers to both the geographic origin of these systems, which form almost exclusively in tropical regions of the globe and their formation in maritime tropical air masses. The term “cyclone” refers to such storms’ cyclonic nature, with counterclockwise rotation in the Northern Hemisphere and
clockwise rotation in the Southern Hemisphere. Depending on its location and strength, a tropical cyclone is referred to by names such as hurricane, typhoon, tropical storm, cyclonic storm, tropical depression and simply cyclone.

supermarket” said Mufty.
“That’s okay,” said the bear with a grin.
“I like to make it myself!”
“And how exactly do you make a squirrel pie?” asked Mufty.
“Well, it’s quite simple really,” said the bear. “First, you get a squirrel. Then you add
a touch of salt, not too much and not too little. Then, you stuff it in your mouth!”
“I don’t think I like the sound of that”
said Mufty, “can’t we have chocolate cakes instead?”
The bear went mad. It grabbed Mufty. Then it grabbed the salt and sprinkled some on Mufty’s bushy tail. Then it opened its mouth really wide and pulled Mufty towards its giant teeth. After doing that, the bear sneezed . . . and sneezed again. It couldn’t stop sneezing. It sneezed so much that it dropped Mufty, which ran out and climbed a tree not far from its house.
The bear didn’t know where Mufty was.
It looked for Mufty everywhere in the house, but couldn’t find it. The bear was mad again, it kicked everything in the house and went out growling loudly.
After a few moments, Mufty descended from the tree. It decided never to let a bear in its house again.

The following text is for questions 11 to 14.
A dispute arose among a number of animals, namely the wolf, fox, cat and hare. Unable to settle matters by themselves, they summoned the bear to act as judge.
The bear asked the disputants, “What are you disputing?”
“We are disputing the question, as to how many ways each of us has to save our life in time of danger,” they answered.
The bear first asked the wolf, “Now, how many ways do you have to escape?”
“A hundred,” was the answer.
“And you?” he asked the fox.
“A thousand,” he answered.
Then the bear asked the hare, “How many do you know?”
“I have only my fast legs,” was the answer.
Finally, the bear asked the cat, “How many ways to escape do you know?”
“Only one,” answered the cat.
Then the bear decided to put them all to the test in order to see how each one would save itself in time of danger. It suddenly threw itself at the wolf and crushed it half to death. Seeing what had happened to the wolf, the fox started to run away, but the bear grabbed it by the tip of its tail, and even to this day the fox has a white spot on its tail. The hare, with its fast legs, escaped by running away.
The cat climbed a tree, and from its high perch sang down, “The one who knows
a hundred ways was captured; the one who knows a thousand ways was injured; Longlegs must run on forever; and the one who has only one way to escape sits high in a tree and holds its own.”
So it is.

The following text is for questions 17 to 20.
A hungry wasp found a leftover pie on the floor beside a table. Just as it was about to take its first bite of pie, a voice yelled out, “What do you think you’re doing?”
The voice scared the wasp so bad it thought it was going to lose its stinger. It looked over its wing but didn’t see anybody. “I said, what do you think you’re doing,” the voice said again.
This time it looked straight up and there before it was the strangest looking canary you ever laid your eyes on. The canary’s entire body was brown and yellow, except for its head which was dark green. Humans get teased if they accidentally put on two different colored socks in the morning; given that, maybe that’s why it is in a cage in the first place,” the wasp thought. It suddenly felt a sense of compassion for the multi colored bird. It then said to the canary, “I was just going to have a little taste of this pie.”
“It’s not yours to taste,” said the canary.
“I’m sorry but I couldn’t help myself,” it said.
“Don’t you have any food?” asked the canary.
“No, Sir,” it replied. “The flowers are all dried up and it’s slim pickings out there.”
“Well, there is no shortage of food here for me,” said the canary. “But every day it’s the same ole thing: nuts, seeds, vegetables, fruits, herbs . . . . After a while the nuts and fruits can make you feel a little nutty and fruity. To make matters worse, every Tuesday my owners have relatives over for pizza. One of them is a little girl and when I ask for pizza, she always replies, ‘Polly, want a cracker?’ Every time I get asked that I cringe. When they first bring you home from the store you expect it for the first couple of months. However, day after day after day makes me want to wear earplugs,” said the canary.
“Well, it sounds like we both have our problems,” the wasp said.
“Wait a second,” said the canary. “I have an idea.”
“What is it?” the wasp asked.
“Why don’t we each have some of the pie?”
“Fair enough,” the wasp said. “However, you’re in a cage, what’s stopping me from just eating this all by myself?”
“I may be in this cage, but I know a lot of birds on the outside that would just fancy a nice little wasp like yourself.”
The wasp swallowed so hard it shook the canary’s cage. “I see your point. Do you have napkins?”
“No,” said the canary. “But I have fresh water in my cage you can help yourself to.”
They ate, and ate, and ate. The canary and the wasp nearly stuffed themselves with apple pie. A life-long friendship was formed that day.

The following text is for questions 8 to 12.
An Igloo or a snow house is a kind of shelter built out of snow. It is also called “aputiak” and is a temporary winter home or a hunter’s underground dwelling used by the Canadian and Greenland Inuit (Eskimos).
The word Igloo comes from the Eskimo “Igdlu” which means house or home. It is also related to a town named Iglulik and Inuit people, both belonging to Iglulirmuit Island. For an Inuit, Igloo is not restricted to only homes made out of snow, but can also be a cloth tent, sod houses, houses constructed of driftwood and even modern buildings. Generally, an Igloo is a shelter built out of blocks of snow and is dome shaped.
There are three types of Igloo, each one of
a different size and used for different purposes. First is the small-sized Igloo, built only as
a temporary shelter and also during hunting expeditions on the open sea. It is mostly used for only a night or two. The second is the intermediate-sized Igloo, for families. It usually has a single large room and could accommodate two families quite easily. The third is the large-sized Igloos, usually built in pairs, with one structure being a temporary one meant for special occasions and the other one for living in. The large-sized Igloos could also denote several small Igloos connected by tunnels thus having up to five rooms and providing shelter to almost 20 people. These are used to host community feasts and traditional dances of the Inuit people.
The Igloo is an ingenious invention and is very effective in keeping people warm. By using just a lamp for heat inside the Igloo can raise the temperature to 41 degree Fahrenheit when the air outside could be minus 40 degrees. The shape of the Igloo constructed with a small tunnel to pass through actually helps keep the wind and excessive snow at bay. Thus an Igloo does not generate heat but preserves the heat generated by the human body.

The following text is for questions 15 to 18.
Dietary Fiber
Dietary fiber, also known as roughage, is
a type of carbohydrate, which is indigestible to humans. Dietary fiber comes from vegetables, fruit, grain and legumes.
There are two types of dietary fiber, namely soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water, like the pectin found in fruit. The examples of soluble fiber are many vegetables, barley, oatmeal, rye and fruits like peaches, grapes, berries and pears. It’s important to eat the skin of fruits like apples, since that is where most of the fiber resides. On the other hand, insoluble fiber, such as cellulose from grain, doesn’t dissolve in water. Whole grains, pasta, bran, brown rice, seeds, bran, beans and a few vegetables like carrots and celery, provide insoluble fiber.
Proper amounts of dietary fiber improve health in ways other than digestion. Studies have shown that fiber seems to lower cholesterol, in combination with a balanced diet. There is also an inexplicable link between a diet high in fiber and a lowered risk of heart disease. In the stomach, fiber seems to affect the speed with which sugar enters the bloodstream. This means our blood sugar levels stay more consistent, our insulin doesn’t work as hard, and we benefit from a reduced risk of developing diabetes.

The following text is for questions 7 to 10.
A pearl is a hard object produced within soft tissue, specifically the mantle, of a living shelled mollusk, such as an oyster, clam, conch, or gastropod.
Pearls are formed when an irritant, such as
a bit of food, grain of sand, or even a piece of the mollusk’s mantle becomes trapped in the mollusk. To protect itself, the mollusk secretes substances, aragonite (a mineral) and conchiolin (a protein), that it also uses to build its shell. These substances are secreted in layers and
a pearl is formed. Depending on how the aragonite is arranged, the pearl may have a high luster or a more porcelain-like surface.
There are two main types of pearls, those that occur naturally and those that are
produced synthetically called cultured pearls. Naturally occurring pearls hold a significant value due to the rarity of pearls produced. Of the 8,000 or so species of oysters, only about 20 of those are able to constantly produce pearls. For the most part the pearls these oysters produce, few maintain a round or spherical shape. Cultured pearls are created by the same process as natural pearls, but are given a slight nudge by pearl harvesters.
While cultured and natural pearls are considered to be of equal quality, cultured pearls are generally less expensive because they aren’t as rare.

The following text is for questions 14 to 18.
Comets are an interesting and popular space phenomenon. A comet is a relatively small extraterrestrial body consisting of ice, dust and gas.
Comets are part of the Solar System. They move around the Sun in highly elliptical orbits. They orbit around the Sun just like planets, but their orbits are more elongated. Periodic comets are those that have an orbit of less than 200 years, but they comprise only 4% of all known comets. The famous Halley’s comet has a period of 76 years. It was observed many times in history and was last seen in 1986.
A comet typically consists of a nucleus, coma and tail. The nucleus is embedded in the coma and they together form the head of
a comet. The nucleus of a comet is also known as the “dirty snowball” since it is primarily made up of ice with a small amount of dust.
As a comet gets near the Sun, solar heat turns the ice in the nucleus into a gaseous haze that surrounds the nucleus and this becomes the coma.
The tail of a comet usually consists of
a straight gas tail and a curved dust tail.
Its length can vary from very short ones to the rare few that cover a significant fraction of the sky. It can be very long and bright, and is the most distinctive feature of a comet.
Adopted from: http://www.hko.gov.hk/gts/event/event-comet_e.htm (January 11, 2013)
14. What is the last paragraph about?
A. Parts of a comet.

The following text is for questions 6 to 10.
Once upon a time, there lived an orphan named Yaoh. As winter rolled in, he had no wood to start up a fire to warm up the house. He was cold. So, he decided to look for some wood to build a fire. He went searching down a flat hill with an axe. Yaoh looked and looked, as he came across a huge tree. He was thrilled and started chopping it. The echoes of the chopping sound lingered across the mountains.
On top of the tree was an eagle’s nest. She heard and felt the chopping vibrations and thought it was an earthquake. “What is that annoying noise?!” she asked herself. Frightened, the mother eagle looked down to see what was going on, only to find out someone was about to chop her family down. The mother eagle swiftly flew down and asked, “What are you doing?”
Yaoh replied, “I am cold, I have no wood to build a fire so I came down here to get some wood. I need this wood to heat up my house.” The eagle looked at him with fear in her eyes and said, “You’re going to destroy my family if you chop this tree down. My babies have no feathers yet so we cannot move.”
Yaoh felt sorry for the eagle. He then stopped chopping. When he was about to leave, the mother eagle said, “If all you need is wood, I can take you to the moon to get some gold so you can buy wood. Just go home, get some rest, come back very early tomorrow morning with
a big bag. I will take you there to get some gold.” After the mother eagle assured the orphan Yaoh a few times, he believed her and went home.
Yaoh got as much material as he could to sew a bag. He was poor so he didn’t have much. He spent that whole night sewing the bag and before he realized, it was morning already. He rushed down to the valley where the eagle said she would meet him.
Then, Yaoh climbed onto the eagle’s back, and she flew him all the way to the moon. He stuffed his bag with as much gold as he could. “The sun is going to rise and burn us! You’d better hurry up!” the eagle said. Frightened but satisfied with what he got, he jumped up onto the eagle’s back and they flew off as the sun started rising. “Whew! You almost got us burned!” the eagle cried out.
After this, Yaoh lived like a rich man. He bought himself wood, clothes, food, all that a rich man could buy, but most importantly he built himself a house.

The Three Brothers and the Pot of Porridge
Three brothers were traveling all day through the dense rainforest. They were very tired and needed a suitable place to rest for the night, a place where they would be safe from nocturnal animals.
They spotted a little isolated hut in the distance. When they arrived at the hut, they met a kindly old woman who invited them in and offered them a place to spend the night.
The old woman offered them some porridge which she was cooking in an iron pot over some firewood. The brothers declined because they knew that the old woman was very poor, and there was enough porridge only for herself.
Then, they went to sleep. However,
sometime in the night, the youngest of the three brothers woke up. He was very hungry. So he went into the kitchen to see if there was any porridge left. He saw that there was enough porridge for one person. He ate it. However, he then realized his folly, and decided to cover it up. He went out to pick some stones to put in the pot. He hoped the old woman would not notice.
The three brothers were up early the next morning to continue on their journey. They bade farewell to the old woman and thanked her for her kindness.
The old woman discovered the stones in her pot soon after the brothers left and immediately set out after them. She accused them of stealing her porridge and filling her pot with stones. The three brothers denied doing it, so the old woman challenged them to take a test.
They went to a nearby river which had a log laying across it. Each one of them would have to walk across the river on the log.
The first two brothers walked confidently across the river. But the youngest brother was so scared as he walked. His step faltered several times, and he eventually fell into the river.
The youngest brother then asked for help. Because the woman was kind, she helped him with her boat. The youngest brother was regretful and expressed his gratitude to the woman many times. To express his gratitude, he then worked for the woman as her servant.

When they grew up, they knew that one day they would be separated. They didn’t want it happen. They wished that they could be together forever in the light they loved so much. Because they had this wish, they decided to visit the King of Light and ask him to grant their wish.
One day they decided to make the journey to the King of Light’s castle. It was a marvelous castle, shinning and twinkling like diamonds on the hillside.

The King was brighter than the sun, twinkled brighter than the stars, and his glow out did the moon’s.
The King asked the boys, “Why have you come to see me?”
And Shay and Dawn answered him by saying, “We have come to ask you to grant our wish. We love to play in the light together and we wanted to know if you would allow us to be together in the light forever?”
The King knew that the boys had traveled so far, and loved the light and each other so much. So, he decided to grant their wish.
The King said, “Because of your love for each other, I will grant your wish, for you and all people. From now on you will be called Shadow, and you will follow all people when the light is bright. That way your love will be a witness to everyone when they walk in the light of the sun, they will see their shadow, and remember the love you have for each other and for light.”
